Book Hardware with Shanna Leino
As part of MCBA’s 2017 Book Art Biennial, select visiting artists taught classes that are not normally offered by MCBA, among them a two day Book Hardware class with artist Shanna Leino. The class began with crafting a quarter-leather practice book bound on wooden shaped boards with cords. All nine of us in the class frantically sewed and bound the books before breaking for lunch and returning to the real fun-the metal working.
Unfortunately due to the pace, I didn’t take many pictures during the class. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a primer or refresher in basic metalworking-among the basic skills we learned were cutting, hammering, annealing, filing, insetting and riveting brass. I look forward to using this as a launchpad for much functional corner and clasp brasswork to come!
